My lists for the Goldrush Rampage

These are the lists that I played in the Goldrush Rampage.

We played divide and Conquer, with a 3 list requirement. Three lists, character restrictions, and reinforcements really made for an interesting list design

My E-Nemo list was my anti Hordes list. I felt Nemo allowed me to out or equal threat most hordes lists and Alpha just as strongly if not stronger. Energizer and Nemos feat allow for some great attrition or assassination turns. Chargers are amazing, but with his feat turn they are pretty crazy and almost always useful. In non feat turns a Single Focus point still works wonders with them, allowing double fire or one cheap juicey shot. Have a Charger show up in Reinforcements, allows you to really but them to work out side of the feat turn, as it arrives with full focus.

My Caine List was what I thought was a balanced all comers list. I focus on building up the Stormblade ranged game and in after playing in the event, I think I want rangers with them in the future. Both Games I played with Caine, the Stormblades refused to die, having an early game defencive buff (arcane shield form Jr. or Blur from Caine) and buffed by Rupert with Tough and fearless. With them hanging in for a turn or three longer then they seemed they should, allowed them to bring plenty of pain. Getting Jarl Skuld to one health and assassinating Kharchev.

My P-Haley list was my anti Terrain list, encase i got stuck on a forest loaded table or something similar. It's a real beating and I want to play it more. It was also fun with reinforcements because having a full focus Hunter showing up on your feat turn is just sweet. It's also a pretty balanced list, but I feel it's stronger against infantry spam as opposed to a Heavy beast list. It can crack some heavy armor, but it really depends on it's feat turn to do the damage. The Storm strider is nice in this list, because removing the enemies' charge with Temporal Barrier really increases it's durability against Infantry and TB also increases it's accuracy. Nyss Hunters on nutty when they assault and make it into melee under the effects of her Feat. I think I'm going to focus on this list for a while.

Goldrush Rampage

Yesterday, I played in the Goldrush Rampage a new Warmachine tournament that's going to happen twice a year. I was really impress with the event, I expected this to be a neato steamroller, but it was something more. While it was a Full steamroller, they also ran a Master Craftsmen painting contest and had a ton of in game achievements that earned you raffle tickets, for a very generous prize pool. It was a five round event with a $15 dollar entry fee, but aside from having three Judges, great prize support, you also got s sweet swag bag that had full color print out of the scenarios to be played that day, there was a commemorative resin objective marker, and full color interactive objective cards in sleeves. You might have already had access to this stuff, but I thought it was really classy to provide a bunch of little extras to make the game play smoother. The swag bag it's self was a nice black canvas bag that was perfect for carrying my rulebook, counter box and all my paperwork around in.

I had a great time and played great games, but I did lose my first two games and I'm a little bummed about that. I played each game well, but the first game I lost to Scenario because I was too focused on getting a caster kill on the Troll Warlock Jarl. Jarl casting Quicken on Fen Blades make then scary fast. I did get him to one hitpoint at game end, so I feel like I was in it to win it, but I made some mistakes both minor and large, so I feel I learned a lot on being a better player. My second loss was against Retribution and I really felt like I was diced until I was thinking about it today and realize I just need to be smarter. I was doing a incredible job moping up Sentinels, and killed his Phoenix, most his battle mages both Mage Hunter Assassins, and Archanist. I was feeling very incontrol with TB up and Haley Camping two Focus for armor or Vortex Spear. My opponent activates Rahn, but he's so back field, He Feats, then trys to chain blast some Nyss Hunters and mostly does nothing. I'm getting really excited about the supposed Lockdown I have on him. So he moves up hit last two battle mages and shots at Haley. I'm super happy with my self as I vortex spear both force bolts away. Thinking I was now officially safe, I ws shocked when a Magister moved out form behind a tree, moves up his max distance and shoots at Haley. He's barily in range and rolls a Critical hit, pulling Haley forward 2"s and knocking here down. He also punched 10 damage though her armor and leaves her for a sitting duck. The Storm Fall archer I had no respect for, walk into range and execute her with Brutal Damage. If I had been an Inch back I would have been out of range of the magister and archers. If I had blocked LOS to Haley with the Defender and Jr, she would have survived. Jr. could also have dropped Arcane Shield of the Storm Strider and popped it on Haley too.

I had a Bye on Round three and had to sweet games where my Epic Nemo list dominated Gators and my P-Caine list killed Kharchev.

This was a long day of awesome gaming. I'm diffidently going to the next Goldrush Rampage. Also Stormblades with Snipe that refuse to die are pretty good.

Troll painting!!

I've been painting Trolls lately. I've dug out my trolls from last year and realised that While I painted most of them, the paint jobs are not at the level I'm at now a days, so I've been touching them up. Additionally, I'm painting up a friends Troll army so he can play in the Bay Area Open.

Here is my Mulg I've re-based touched up and tried to get his runes to glow Orange.

These are the Trolls I'm painting from my Friend, He gave me a E Doomie list to paint first. I'm sure I'll paint a lot of other units for him.

The Earthborn is almost finished I need to paint his loin cloth and detail him a bit.

Another Model that's over 70% done. Not sure what Else I need to do with this guy, other then base him.

Epic Doomshaper is only base coated at the moment. I need to do a lot with him.

The Axer is also close to fully basecoated

Mulg is almost done. I need to paint the base and figure out what I'm going to do about his runes.

Hey all,
It's been a while since I last posted and that's only because I'm a big slacker. I've been doing plenty of Gaming in the last month or two. I've been playing my Cryx. The Casters I've been playing are Elich, Coven and Denny1. I've been playing Elich (Epic Asphixous) for players that have issues with Bane Spam or Cryx in General. The Coven seem very sweet to me, spamming multiple Infernal Machines a turn is very sweet if you like Jacks. My Coven lists tend to run Deathjack, Reaper, and a bunch of Bone jacks, typically 4or 5. The different Bonejacks as pretty sweet at moving around and dealing with light armor and meduim or light infanty. Plus the Coven loves arc nodes, for long range downtown spell assassinations and ease of buffing. I've been plenty surprised with how good the bonejacks can be when not "runspeed arcnoding". I'm really starting to love the Defilers with it's Spray and the Deathripper is pretty decent in melee, even better with Armor debuffs on the target and Infernal machine upping it's threat and accuracy.

Recently most my games have been in the 25 or 35 point range, so there are less chaff on the table (by Chaff, I mean stuff that I need to kill to get to the real priority targets), but I really enjoy the smaller games. I think it places more impesses on the Casters or Warlocks, as they have a larger impact on the game over all. 50 Point games are good and all but It's starting to feel a bit like a long 40k VP Grind or extreme Warmachine (where you set up a ton of models then get caster kill on turn two with almost no causalites on either side). I guess I'm saying 50 games tend to have more extreme play in my opinion.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I ran a Foodmachine event last Saturday. It was a 25 point Steamroller with some special rules if you brought in cans to donate to charity.

When the players signed up they donated thier cans and got tickets to use in the event, you had to rip your tickets in half to use them.

At the end of the Day Alan Smith's P-Goreshade BaneSpam list dominated. With Bryan Carrol's Retribution getting Second place.

Journeyman League

Our Journeyman League is under way and its really bringing new players in and getting older players back into the game. We just hit week 3 and every one is enjoying it.

I haven't posted in the last couple months, but not because of a lack of Warmachine, as I've been playing a fair amount and running a lot of events. So I stopped posting more because Warmachine was so common place, nothing seemed that noteworthy. But that's not really true, I was also lazy and probably needed some time away from Warmachine. I also almost stopped painting, so I need to start back up. I have some troll Pygs on the painting table, a second squad of Rangers and still have to finish the second Storm Strider, so it's not like I'm lacking projects.

So I've been working on a bunch of different projects lately.

First, I assembled Storm Strider #2, now I need to start painting it. I'm waiting on one last model before I start painting the Storm Guard.

I've been working on new forest templates and small ponds for my events.

A shot of my painting table and my new Kitty who jumped up on the table just as I shot the photo.

Finally I did some minor Conversion work on my Cyclone, chopping the lower arms off at the elbows and pining them in a more aggressive stance. I'm really happy with it, I actually want to play with the model now.

Still loving the Storm Strider

It's really digging the Storm Strider as I've gotten more experience with it.In my last game it survived a Full focus Stormclad's charge (he didn't get base to base so one got two swings before being repulsed out of melee), then fried it good with boosted damage rolls before Epic Striker finished it with one hit. A big part of what makes the Strider so good to me it how people don't want to attack it or if they do go out on a limb but fail to alpha it, they get punished. It's just a versatile model that seems to always have something relevant that it can do.

A lot of different casters bring different tricks that really help it out. I love it with Darius with his repair ability (but his feat doesn't work on it) and his Crane. The Crane is a place effect so it works on the Strider and it's a place "with in" 1", but not "completely with in". So this allows you to place the Strider almost 6"s away, it's like a triple telekinesis. With Epic Haley, you have Temporal Acceleration, Telekinesis, and Defection to buff you Strider. Epic Nemo gives it Polarity shield which greatly increases it survivabilty and it's 360' on the Strider too. Caine can Snipe it and give it some Deadeye love, while prime Haley has Temporal Barrier, Arcane shield (although you should always have Jr. in the same list as the strider anyway), and her Feat. I'm really looking forward to using the Strider with Siege and it should rock the house on his feat turn and clever use of explosivo can up the carnage you first blast causes each turn.

Bay Area Open tournament report or Strider-krieg!

While I judged during Saturday’s 50 point Steamroller, I played in Sunday’s 35 point Steamroller. Here is my story.

I played two lists, a Darius and a E-Haley list. Both used the Storm Strider to achieve ranged supremacy and both casters added something big to the Striders effectiveness.

Round One: I played a Retribution player running Ravyn, with a Chimera, Invictors Marshaling a Griffon, Full Mage Hunter Striker force with UA, Stormfall, and Battle Mages. I think he had a Arcanist or two. This Army was gorgeous and had a sweet Diorama display with a little water fall and river. I wish I took pictures on Sunday, but I was more focused on the Tournament. Anyway, I should have lost this game, I played horrible, I choose my Jack heavy list to fight MHSF and also forgot to deploy my Half Jacks. (I forgot to pull them from my figure case and had a Judge run out to my car to get them). However as bad as I played, Darius is a tank and my opponent was an old MK1 player that knows how to bring the pain, but not in MK2, so I was able to slowly take him apart once he started to make small misplays. Also the Storm Strider was able to wreak Havoc on his Mage Hunters once I started to arc into half jacks that ran up to the MHSF. I was able to have my Hammersmith fight his way deep into his army, getting the caster kill. Darius’s Feat allowed my jacks to recover mid game (although Thorn got alpha’ed turn two).

Round Two: I played E-Haley here aginst a Cryx player using P-Denny, Nightmare, 2 Defilers, Machine Wraith, Tarterus, full Bane Knights, Min Mechthralls, Necro Surgion, and some other stuff, maybe a War Witch or Skarlock.
The Storm Strider was MVP here, with Haley casting Deadeye, Temporal Acceleration and sometime TK on it, it was everywhere doing everything. Thorn charged into the Knights, letting Haley Arc a arcane bolt into the Machine Wraith, then the Sword Knights pronto up the Arcane shielded Centurion. While the strider spat out lightning death.
The Strider was able to survive a charge from Nightmare, but got fully loaded on power tokens. He was then TKed, Dead eyed and Accelerated to walk up to Denny and blaster her off the table. I think that six man Mechanithrall was pretty amazing, as I killed like over 12 Mcthralls that game. Overall, Haley’s Feat on turn two and the Strider shooting every turn allowed me to really take his army apart before he could do much damage.

Round Three: I played a Nemesis of mine, Benjamin from Oakland. We first meet at Kublacon and later at we battled at Lock and Load in the Iron Arena. He was running a Khador list with P-Vlad. Ben’s a great guy and a fun opponent that brings an A game. His list was something like P-Vlad, Spriggan, Behemoth, Gun Carriage, Widow Makers, Man Hunter, and Dragoon. Maybe some other solos I’m forgetting like maybe a War dog or the Gobber. I think I won initiative and started of with my Strider being craned by Darius (it’s a place with in 1” effect, so my Strider was getting a 6” placement effect going) then Rolling up and shooting up the Gun Carriage some and arcing around a bit doing little of then chunking away at the Carriage. The rest of my team moved up to scenario objectives and held ground. Thorn was able to charge and finish of the Carriage on Turn two and Disrupt the behemoth, the Strider was craned again and now was able to shoot up the Widowmakers. The Hammer smith was able to charge the Behemoth, but lacking much focus slapped it around some then launched him towards vlad. When the Hammer Smith advanced after the slammed Khador jack, this triggered the Dragoon who charged the Hammer smith. This caused an odd cluster as the behemoth ended up battling Thorn while the dragoon tried to punish the arcane shielded hammer smith. The Spriggan tried for an assassination run on Darius but was about a half inch short on the charge, this last move left both scenario objectives uncontested and in my control and I won on Scenario on my turn. This was a very hard fought game, once again tough jacks with Armor buffs can often survive long enough for Darius’s feat to give them a back breaking full heal.

Round Four: I played Darius again. This time I played against E-Severius’s Menoth cannon brigade. Severius was being played by Brandon from the Central Coast. He got fastest caster kill yesterday aginst E-Graspy with a bulked out version of the list I had to fight.
I think it was E-Sevi, 2 Reckoners, Vanquisher, Blessing of Vengeance, 2 Vassals, Book, Full Choir and Wracks. His plan was simple, shoot my warcaster a lot. I went second and he advanced towards my army, the only real terrain was a huge 5’ or 6” wide building between us, so he advances with his army ready to flow around the building but using it to protect his caster some and anchor his jacks. My first turn Darius did spells and Craned the Strider up 6”s, then it walked up 5” and killed a Vassel and 4 out of 6 Choir. The Ironclad played body guard for the Strider. The Hammersmith and Thorn cover the other side of the building. A Storm smith runs up the the corn of the building, out of LOS. His Turn, he focuses only on my caster, having his Arc node cruse up to blast me with a Hexblast, but getting stopped because he walked into the Storm Smith’s melee reach. Reckoner 1, get’s Choired and with 3 focus, assaults up and shoots Darius for 11 point, then the Vassal gives it a second show that does 4. The Vanquisher also shoots under Choir but does minor damage. The Second Reckoner can’t get Los so shoots my Iron clad or something. My Turn, I mistakenly advance the Storm Smith to engage all his jacks, but the Blessing then triggers his defensive strike and kills him. The I allotted 2 Focus to the Hammer smith, but Screwed up my LOS for the Strider, meaning the only real target was the Reckoner near the Vanquisher and Blessing, this did some decent damage (7or 8 points overall) but did jack on the electro leaps. The Hammer Smith charged the Reckoner and unfortunately scrapped it with it’s chain attack, and didn’t get to use beatback to engage the other two jacks, so never got to spend the two focus I allotted. I had Thorn charge the other Reckoner and disrupt it. I killed his second Vassel, somehow, but can’t remember if it was from the Storm Strider or something else.

His Turn, he goes for my caster again and managed to kill him by a point or two. If I have camped one Focus instead of allotting to the Hammersmith, I would have survived and I could have crushed what remained of his army, but blessing Defensive Strike opened a hole in my defenses I was hoping he’d have to waste activations to remove and the Hammersmith not getting beat back form a Chain attack because it’s not a normal attack also threw off my plan. It was a nail biter of a game for both of us. Darius almost pulled it off, with craning the Strider around allowing for incredible range and aiming options. Also Darius is a beast to bring down, If Sevi hadn’t been aggressively knocking Arcane shield off with Hex blast, He wouldn’t have died. Brandon was a great opponent and he told me he had over 50 matches with this list, so I think he deserved it more then me with maybe 5 games with my list before the tournament.

This last weekend I went to the Bay Area Open, on Saturday I was a Floor Judge and I played in the 35 point Steamroller on Sunday. I'll write up a proper report on my play experiences and how Darius + Strom Srider = Win, later this week. This is mostly a Photo dump.

I'm not sold on the look of the Wraith Engine, the colors just don't work for me. Otherwise, I like the model, with the exception of the warped pipes on the carapace not lining up with the first smoke stack on it's back.

I'm paining these Cryx are for a friend. So they are not my normal cryx colors

Storm Striding, my experience with the new Cygnar battle engine.

I was lucky enough to attend Lock and Load this year and managed to pick up the Storm Strider a month or so early. I build the Strider at the show and then played five games with it at Lock and Load. Once I got back, I've averaged 3-4 game a week and I think out of those I've played two or three games with out the Strider. So I'm well over a dozen games with it and probably very close to 20. So after all those games, here is my assessment of the Storm Strider.

First I'll layout my overall feel for it and then drill into some of the details. I really like the Strider, it's a Firepower asset that really adds something to Cygnar that it's been lacking, a strong mobile firebase that's not a focus hog. It's Mobile with Pathfinder, long ranged, has several accuracy tricks to make it very versatile on how it spends it's firepower, and is a pain to kill for a lot of units/models. However it's fragile to powerful Melee units, Reach jack/Beasts, and can have problems dealing with Jacks, Beasts or Casters.

In most the Games I've played the Strider, it's great at sitting in the back field and blasting away. I've been very impressed with it's Lightning Generator's electro leaps and the weapons pow 15. I find I almost always have a good highly dependable play each turn, because it's combination of range, electro leaping, aiming and super conductor. When facing a combined arms force, I can usually target jacks or beasts while picking targets that can have beneficial electro leaps. When facing stealthed targets, it's not hard to run a model up close to shoot and have the electro leaps bounce into the stealthed models. Aiming and Super Conductor can give you a fairly reliable rat 8 and the occasional rat 10. Critical Disruption also adds to it's ranged shock potential. Two shots a turn allows for fairly reliable firepower and a very decent amount of anti infantry firepower.

The Weakness of this unit is also one of it's strengths. It don't use Focus. Battle engines bring an almost jack/beast like battle presence but with out requiring focus, However not being able to reliably boost attack or damage rolls really reins in it's potential against hard targets. The Strider like most the other battle Engines appears to be largely focused on anti infantry and table control. Battle Engines will rarely get a caster kill with out a ton of other support, as opposed to a similar priced heavy jack and 2-3 focus.

The Battle Engine has been very survivable in the majority of my games, having only had it destroyed 3, maybe 4 times, about of my dozen plus games. Once someone shoots it and you gain a power token, I've noticed people stop shooting it, unless they have overwhelming firepower. The repulsor field keeps non reach Solos and jacks/beast from dealing to much damage in an alpha, but does little against melee infantry. Jacks or Beasts with Reach will also almost ignore the repulsor field if they have enough movement to get base to base. Additionally clever placement of models can also anchor a model so it can't be pushed away.

Getting back to Melee Infantry, while they are the Strider biggest threat, they also it's preferred target. It's range and Pathfinder can usually allow it to pound and kite most medium to heavy infantry, while light infantry can be abused by clever use of elector leaps (and some good luck on the D3 rolls). Speaking of Pathfinder, it's one of the things I really value about the strider, as Cygnar is pathfinder deficient as a faction, it's almost invaluable to be able to stick a strider on a flack with heavy terrain and being able to just drive through it. The Strider loves to hang out in Rivers and inside forests that other Cygnar units typical have to maneuver around.

The Strider also offers one other form of table control, it's electro leap. Opponents will often try to control or negate the impact of the elector leap by spreading units out or huddling jacks together so the electro leaps bound among them if they are targeted. This adds a layer of complexity to there turns that can eat up time or cause other mistakes and game play errors. Units that are forced to spread out lose out on alpha striking potential. Huddled jacks allow you to try to outmaneuver or aoe wreak them with things like Black Oil, E-Eiyrss, and other small area debuffs.

Caster wise, I've played the Strider with Constance, E-Haley, E-Stryker, E-Nemo, Siege, P-Caine, and P-Haley. I liked it with Constance, as she tend to take a melee heavy list and the Ranged Support the Strider provides can really help disrupt your enemy and it's electro leaps can really help out with facing super high defense infantry like Kayazy or Iron fleshed Winterguard. With E-Stryker, I run a Stormblade Deathstar and they have some good synergies with the Strider, as the Strider can shoot them easily for Electro leap fun and they can get the +2 to hit on there ranged attack if they are attacking something with in 5" of the Strider. Both Haley's can give it a Third Attack and dead eye, while P-Haley has Temporal Barrier to defend against melee infantry and to make the strider more accurate. E-Nemo was the only caster I didn't like the Strider with, as he can power an amazing ranged offence and I'd rather have spent the points on more jacks or jack support. Siege's feat worked quite well with the Strider's guns if your clever with targeting and abusing the electro leaps. P-Caine can Sniper and Dead Eye it, but he's pretty heavy on the anti infantry himself, so outside large games it might make a P-Caine list over specialized at anti infantry. Overall I think it's getting pretty close to an auto include for me, unless the list really requires the points spent towards a theme/goal.

Overall I'm very pleased with the Strider and the other battle engines I've faced, the Arcantrik Force Generator and Gun Carriage. They all seem to be compelling models with a solid slant towards anti Infantry. While they have a cost similar to a warjack or warbeast, they are with out a doubt easier to kill and with out reliable boosting they lack the explosive damage or highly accurate attacks that Focus provides. The Menoth battle engine does allow for reliable boosts, so that engine probably plays stronger as an anti jack/caster unit.

First here is a Photo of a 200 point Unbound game a couple of players are battling for the Rotterhorn league.

Here I have a 50 point Game aginst Nate a Circle player I used to work with. I was really annoyed by the druids just ignoring all my electrical shenanigans. I guess it was not a big deal but I was really frustrated about it.

I was using some new terrain I inherited. We used to use it to run an event called Plasma Ball Run at Games Days and local cons.

I was worried this terrain would suck to play on, but quite the opposite. We ruled all one level changes counted as Hills and it was easy to maneuver on, but we where constantly fighting for the high ground.

The Bottle neck between the two rock pillars made for brutal close range fighting. The mission was Overrun so we really needed to feed the meat grinder. I was winning the Attrition war when the huge squad of Wolves rounded the corner, engaging the Strider, then letting the Wolflord charge the Storm Strider. He one shotted it, opening LOS from the Squad of Wolves. Moshar then Teleported to one of the wolfs and then shot Nemo down with Crevasse.

75 point Game against Porkbun. He's was playing a Strakov lead Jack heavy list.

This game was a Blast with Widow makers starting the battle of the pillars, and ending with Strakov Running an assassination attempt on EHaley but running along the tops of pillars to then shot down on her form an 8" elevation. The Assassination failed, but not by much.

Alan Smith's AFG

The AFG was a really pain. I didn't have enough firepower to try to attack the AFG and my Melee never got close to it.
The AFG mostly shot rat 9 Rifts and that really sucked for my poor Jacks, especially with Rahn TKing them backwards.

Both Storm Strider and AFG survived this battle. The Storm Strider is exactly what I've been looking for in Cygnar.
I give it a big thumbs up.

So I just ran a Mangled Metal Event where it's 30 point playing only Grind scenarios. Your allowed to spend up to 5 points on solos or units. The turnout was not great but the games where. Alan Smith won with a Tier 4 Mortinabra list. He had his jacks merclessly huntdown and Throw those Grinders deep into the enemies side of the table and Alan often won by dropping both Grinders into the score zone on the same turn.

Kublacon is my favorite Bay area gaming convention, it's always been very well ran with great support for events and a very organised and player friendly staff. So this year I coordinated with a fellow PG from Sacramento, Jimmy (Aka PG_Warder). I can't say enough good things about Jimmy and he's been running Steamrollers at Kubla for a while now, but this year he didn't have access to enough Terrain for the event. Well I have a ton of Terrain, so I offer to bring my Scenery up for all our events. No Problem, I dust off all the old Brainbasha Terrain I inherited earilyer this year and dug out all my different scerny collections from over the years. Yeah I said collections, as I've always been a collector of terrain and I've helped build up terrain for different people, clubs, and events for the better part of two decades. Some stuff was stored because it fell out of favor and others for game play reasons. But for what ever reason, it was hidden way in some storage bin, living in a utility shed or closet.

Some terrain I was cleaning up. A quick spray paint job covered all the where and tear of a decade or more of play and will be a sweet base coat if I ever get around to painting it all up.

Once I got the Terrain Squared away (It took a few weeks working on it a few days a week), I went back to my Cygnar army and made sure everything for kubla was painted, flocked, and based with Arcs.

I'ts a bit amazing sometimes how much basing can increase a models looks.

I played or ran 4 events at Kubla for a total of 30+ hours of Warmachine. It was a blast. Friday night was a 15points Killbox Highlander verent event called "Mangled Grind". Saturday was the 50 point steamroller, the main event of the con. Saturday night was "Desperate Measures" another highlander vareint but with not points limit and only allowing one warcaster, heavy, light, and solo. Sunday, I ran a 35 point Teir fight. Monday also has a Multiplayer single caster and Jack/beast thunderdome like event, but I didn't stay the extra day, so I hope it ran as well as the other events.

Each event is really worth mentioning but I'll focus on the "Desperate Measures" event for this post. Desperate Measures was Theory hammer unleashed. No points limits. The only limit was caster, and a single Light, Heavy and Solo, but no Restictions on models that included extra models or created units/models. Khador got access to an additional Solo instead of a light. During the steamroller earlier that day we helped get people brainstorming and used Goreshade the Bastard as an example of how you can get around the limits. The players really got into it and we had as many or a couple more players then the steamroller. Some of the sweet ideas/finds where the Minion Warlock solos and Bethayne. I was really suprised no one play Mortenabra or P-Goreshade. Karchev, Behemoth, Drakun, Fenris was very popular, as was Kaya+Laris, Feral, Gorax, Wolflord. The Second Big suprise was the Event Winner, Jeff K and his P-Sevi, Avatar, Blessing of Vengence, Vassel list. Matt R. came in second with his Bethanye, Carnivean, Reak, Forsaken list, and Third place is a bit foggy, so I'll get back to it, later.

Over the Weekend I think the River battles where the most talked about. The Bridge was always a hotly contested strong point, as it gave elevation and cover, even if you could ignore the water. My game in the 50 pointer was no different.

Another terrain feature the raised Eye brows was when someone with reach engaged someone though a window on a ruined building. If the target didn't have reach he was stuck or taking a free strike.

RIFT: I'm digging it

Rift has really captured my MMO time. It's a solid MMO that adds a lot of life to a stale genre, but adding a ton of random events to create a world that's different every time you log in. I've logged into the game to find the city or town I load out at, it now controlled my Deamons or Undead and had to fight to free the town or sometimes just to survive. Standard Quest grinding is always being interrupted by zone wide like Rift invasions or the new zone events. My attempts to log out are frequently delayed by something new that I just found or noticed. I've spent hours playing around with the class system that encourages experimentation and unique builds. The game is also full of treasure you can just find on the ground, namely Artifacts, Cairns and Puzzles. The Game is also really pretty.

I'm sure I could list other features I really like, but this is what I can think of at the moment.

This screen shot does not show all the movement that you would see on the grass/banners and flickering light effects. The constant movement in the background really helps immerse me in Rift.

Painting Shenanigans!!

So I've been experimenting with the "Dip". The "Dip" usually is Minwax Polyshade, a polyurethane wood stain. The stain acts as a beautiful wash, bringing out every tiny pockmark of chain mail and line of plate armour; plus folds of cloth etc. The polyurethane part gives a tremendously durable topcoat to the fig. This wood stain come in a many different colors and can really speed up army painting with good looking results. Army Painter sells a similar dip that's formulated for miniature painting but is a bit pricey. Here's a link to there site, It has a ton of examples of using the Dip. However, while my initial tests seemed to have very positive results, once I shifted into production mode and started to crank out a bunch of models, each batch was flawed. Each Time I tried to paint a dozen or so models at once, the stain would be way too dark, like straight black ink poured over the model, with only the most extreme edges of the models being visible other then glossy black. Each time I thought I figured it out and tried again, this time shaking the models, not just letting it drip back into the can, but same result messed up paintjobs. Then I thought it was do to dipping it instead of applying with a brush. Nope. Turns out I shook up the can nice and good, just before each production session, but just popped the top and dipped when "testing". Once it was shook up it was way too dark, but most the pigment sinks to the bottom over time.

But the good new was in researching why I was having such dramatic variations in results, I found something better then the "Dip". I found a few people expounding the virtues of Future floor wax mixed with colored ink and some water. Awesome.I love Future as a paint additive adding a drop of "magic wash"(50/50 future/water) to paint on a pallet, this makes the paint slow smoother and dry slightly glossier. It also strengths the paint to a degree. Magic Wash is great when painting whites and light colors as brush strokes are often visible, but are almost non existent when using the wash. I had thought about adding Ink to the wash before but had never tried it and had forgotten about it. Now I'm hearing people telling me it's much better then a polyurethane stain for a ton of valid reasons. But before I list the reasons I'll say I'm very happy with the results. I'll post picts soon.

Future vs Minwax
Drying time for Future is between 15-30 minutes, Minwax takes 24 hours.
Future can be cleaned from your brushs and thinned with water. Minwax requires Turpentine.
Future allows you to easily dilute your colors to the point you can really control how dark your stain is and you don't have to shake off excess. Minwax requires a bit of vigorus shaking to remove excess dip, this can be messy getting a polyurethane stain splattered on clothes or surroundings.
Future smells a bit like apples. Minwax smells like oilpaints and is toxic to breath.
Future lets you add any color ink or (maybe paint, I haven't tryed yet). Minwax has a limited selection of colors.
Future is much less glossy then Minwax, while a matt varnish might be preferable, It's not mandatory.. Minwax is extremely glossy and requires a matt varnish.
Future is easyer to control and work with. Minwax is simple but slow, messy, and toxic.
Minwax is probably more durable then Future, but I'm confident Future will protect much better then standard paint and as well as many sealants people use to protect there figures.

I was very hopeful for Minwax and I might have had much better results with Army Painter shades, but I can't think of anything I'd be happier with then Future and what it can do.

I've played a few games in the last week, playing E-Stryker, P-Caine, and Siege.

I heart P-Caine, he's such a army buffer spamming both Deadeye and snipe twice a turn. This really enables your ranged units. Stormblades with Snipe and Deadeye have a 19" threat on ranged attacks that ignore's the target being in melee penalty, with each hit being a pow 14 and three storm gunners with six inched more threat + auto hitting shenanigans. The fact they rock in melee is a sweet bonus but with P-Caine I take them for the Pow 14 assault move shooting tech. Gun Mages and Trenchers also Luv some Deadeyed Snipe (allows the Gunmages to use other shot types with snipe).

With E-Stryker I ran a max Stormblade unit with JR and Rupert there to buff them. They did good damage and soaked a ton of Winterguard sprays, all while rolling that flank. At Turn three I remember to use Madelyn Corbeau, moved Stryker up and then had my jacks clear a lane to Epic Vlad, spent 2 focus of 4" of movement then walked him though a cloud into Vlad and Killed myself because I rolled three dice and hit the magic roll of 17 on 3d6. Woot, I won the moron Lottery. So we tried it again with 2 dice I gained 6 str and took 8 damage, then realized I had only two focus left and still had not taked my attack. So I boosted to hit, connected and realise a second attack would likely miss because Vlad would be buffed up form the damage, so I boosted damage and one shotted the big V. Rolled 14 on the three dice at Dice +4 I think. Mostly I got lucky. I was a little disappointed with that assassination run, it was a lot more sketchy then I though and requires more resourced then I thought.

The Siege Game was sweet Because of a few things, first I played a returning Mark 1 player and this was his first game of Mark 2, so I'm a douche for talking about the smack down I gave him. Second Siege is awesome, He almost soloed a doomreaver squad with Groundpounder and on the feat turn (last turn too) Hit the Butch for 18 damage past armor thanks to Rheinholdt's lucky charm letting me tune the damage up. A hunter shot later and that was game. Third, after the game I realised I hadn't lost a model, a hunter lost both cortex and movemnt and my Iron clad had a few columns but nothing crippled. He almost killed four stormblades, but thanks to the Piper, I made all the tough rolls. Four, I realized how much I'm enjoying Siege and his feat.

I need to get some games with Kraye in. I've played him about a dozen times about six months ago and I think he's very powerful. I just need to get back in practice with him and Cavjacks.

So I've been playing a lot of games with Siege lately, and while I have a fair amount of experience with Cygnar, I haven't played him much until now. I must say he is a powerhouse, but the gobber is a must buy with him. Getting two shots with his rocket launcher is pretty sweet. I sent a bunch of games with him trying to use a Thunderhead for max carnage on his feat turn. However because I can't find any sweet movement tricks to increase the T-head's threat range, I'm going to drop him from my siege lists. Right now my big issue is whether I want to use Long Gunners or Nyss Archers. Both are super sweet units, the Long gunner can fire twice a turn and can also drop a 5" suppressing fire template against stealth infantry. The Nyss are faster, weapon-masters, pathfinders, and hunters but otherwise shoot about the same, but with out the double shot when stationary. Right now I'm leaning towards the Nyss as I've ran into some stealth heavy lists that really limit the Long gunners, while the Nyss are fast enough to attempt to outmaneuver a stealthed force and alpha with weapon-master charges against heavy beasts/jacks. Long Gunners are just so brutal on Sieges feat turn, if you can hit two different targets with there pow 21 CRA. Dice +11 is good against a Khador Jack or Dice +13 on a Cygnar heavy.

I've been playing Cryx lately because there didn't seem to be much happening with them locally, and I wanted to learn them and teach the locals for events outside Game Kastle, our local game store. But I feel I need to start practicing for Kublacon (the best local game convention) and Lock and Load. So after looking at my Cryx, Cygnar, and Trollkin, I have decided to play Cygnar in both events. I'm planning for the Lock and Loaded Masters, so I'm going to focus on three casters, Siege, E-Stryker, and Kraye. I have decent experience with Kraye, Some experience with E-Striker, but I've only had a few games with Siege so I think he's the guy I need to focus on the most. I have a lot of experience with E-Haley, but Figure everyone and there mother will know her tricks, while Kraye and Siege might have some surprise juice, while E-Stryker is well known, but seemingly underplayed, so people might make mistakes against him.

I'll post some lists some time soon.

Hey all,

I've been busy with the Windless Wastes league and getting my Pressgang on so I didn't get around to posting here. I'm still going strong on Warmachine and I'm currently playing Cryx. Latily I've been trying to learn Epic Skarre and while I do win with her, I still feel like I'm missing something with how I play her. Her Feat is awesomesausce, but that's pretty obvious, her spells are very cool but to my surprise Admontion never seems to do much, as I'm either getting hosed by range, I forget to use it (because it's not important at the time), or my opponent close enough it doesn't matter.

The last tournament ran well, although I used the Finals Table appendix rule for the first time and received some negative feedback. Apparently people don't like there last game to not really matter because 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place where now locked in for the top four players. In the future, if I run a Finals Table round, all run it as a bonus round for the top four and the tournament is finished for other players. Otherwise I had a good time running the event.

As for event info, P-Doomshaper won the 25 point Tier fight under the brillant command of Lance. Way to go Lance! Rhyas took second place with Lat laying down beatdown for Everblight's glory! Epic Sorcha (Henry) and Gorten (Alan) Battling it out for Third place, with Sorcha pulling out the Win.

Lastly I've been Playing DC universe online on the PS3.

I've been enjoying the MMO on a Console experence.

My take on the new League stats

Windless Waste Cards

I think the League model stats are different as apposed to better.

Menoth's "Chained Prodigal" is interesting. Blizzard seems useful, but cloud effects are not that hard for Menoth to get, however it's one more defensive buff for Menoth, so that's not bad. Frostbite is a magic ability 7 Spray, so that's situational better then the default magic attack.

I really like the Tempest Wraith and will likely be playing them in the league. While losing Chain Attack Death chill sucks, gaining Snipe will really help this model out in my opinion. Most games I play with Pistol Wraiths involve them getting close enough to attack, getting a few soul tokens, then getting killed before they can use the soul tokens. Snipes extra range show help them load up on souls early game and hopefully allow then to survive long enough to use those soul token. However the Tempest Wraith has pow 10 pistols instead of pow 12, so those soul tokens might be essential to there use, it your attacking anything with a decent armor rating. Thunderbolt and Black Penny just give you more options and are each pretty awesome effects.

I'm also a fan of the Trollkin Cutthroat (this model seems a lot better then the Trolllkin Skinner, but easier to kill with beasts).

I might also find room in my Cryx list for the Swamp Gobber Fumigators, as 1 point for a rat 6 pow 12, 8 inch spray is pretty sweet.

I think the Karax Skirmishers are pretty sweet for Skorne as they lose Shieldwall for Gang, while still retaining Girded, so they are immune to blast damage and can protect ofter models from them too.

Yahraph is interesting, but with out a few Teraphs to back it up, it's not that amazing. It gains Reach and now has a pow 13 Aoe instead of it's normal Strafe Attack. Flanking a Terarph makes him pretty sweet.

The Navigator seems cool, its a monster at scenario games, as hit can slam with momentum or pull with it's Reach melee attack, so it's pretty sweet at removing a troubling model from the edge of a scenario zone.

I think I'm least impressed with the Gnarlhorn Bruiser. It trades Counter Slam for Counter Charge, and I feel that's a bit of a downgrade, but losing followup and gaining free charges and Chain Attack:brutality is neat, circle has Warp Wolves that hit harder if you just want a melee beater or if you want to mess with your opposition's turns, counter slam is better.

Shadowfall Archers are also interesting but I don't see why I'd want to use them instead of the normal Archers, but I guess with Raven where they speed the game with the Snipe Spell on them, they don't need that option, so having Shadowfire instead is a boon. Otherwise trading the Continuous effect Fire for Corrosion is not a trade I'd normally make.

The Manta is another model I'm so-so on. If your not a fan of Stormsmiths, it's pretty cool and can lock down Arcnodes and stuff and it's amphibious so that's neat. However the more I think about it, the more I'm liking it, but it's not enough to tempt me to run out and buy a firefly and play Cygnar this league.

Dmitai Ulchev is cool, but I don't see anyone playing Kayazy latily, so a Character upgrade for them is neato but unlikely to appear in out league.Baring the fact we probably won't see him in play, he's a nice addition of a Kayazy unit, adding Paymaster that allows Pathfinder or Tough on a unit that's already fast and hard to hit. Alswo I just noticed he's a weapon master too.

Overall I like the new stats for the league, but only a few models really look exciting to me. It I had any Troll Skinner's I would be very tempted to play trolls, but I'm currently happy with the Fumigators and Tempest Wraith.

Playing Cryx now and League of Legends

I don't know if I mentioned this but I'm a Press Ganger now, so I'm now Judging the local events as well as organizing then. This means I can't play in tournament as I'm running, which is how I prefer it, but I'm not going to be playing as competitively as I have been. I find that freeing, a I felt tied to my Cygnar and later to my trolls because Warmachine/Horde really benefit experience with models. So I'd been neglecting my other factions. I'm playing Cryx at the moment, focusing on E-Lich and P-Denny. I fell Our meta doesn't have a strong Cryx meta, so I'm going to try to learn these guys and teach the locals about them. E-Skarre is next on the list. After a few months with Cryx, I think I'll hope to Mercs for a while, or Menoth.

I've just recently found "League of Legends" and all I can say is wow. I'm really enjoying this game, it's fast paced, designed for very competitive play and feel a bit like your playing a Warcaster (but with no jacks). If you every played the "Defense of the Ancients" mod in Warcraft 3, this is it's next generation. Defense of the Ancients or DotA was a very popular mod that changed Warcraft 3 into a 1-2 hour epic RPG wargame. In both DotA and League of Legends, you control one Character that's a powerful hero for his army, and the game has two teams, each composed of 3 or 5 players/characters. The players battle it out while a much larger battle rages around them. Each Team need to defeat a gauntlet of Defense Towers, enemy Grunts, and enemy character to destroy there well guarded nexus and win the game. League of Legends is Free to Play and each week all players are given access to 10 random heroes, and you can unlock heroes permintely with real cash or earning points in game. I've played about 8 games and have unlocked 2 heroes so far, so I don't think spending real money is necessary in the least (but it might be fun, there are a ton of different champions, like 40+, so it might take a while to earn a large stable.

So I've played a fair amount of Warmachine in December, but with the Holidays and Wow Expansion I hadn't had much time to think about it or Blog. Anyway, I've been playing Borka and Grimm in the last few Weeks. EDoomie is great, but while I need to play him more, he's a bit cut throat for friendly games. So I've been experimenting with Borka and some new units. I received a Box of Troll Scouts for Xmas, and have been dying to play the Nyss Hunters. So I played two games using the Borka Beach Party list made by Nigel over at Focus and Fury. It's a fun list but I suck with Borka, so instead of using my list to my advantage, I just spearhead with Borka and see if Stumbling Drunk and a protective Mulg can swing the game in my favor. They can.

I also played two games with Grim leading a Blitzer and Impaler, with Nyss Hunters, Scouts, and Full Pyg with Support. This was my first game with out Kriel stone barrier in months and my first game with out Mulg since I got him. It was a neat list, all the pathfinding huntery goodness was a sweet change from most my troll lists. Grim's a cool caster but I find him frustrating with his single shot rifle or net gun. All too often when push comes to shove, Grim needs to move up and take a shot that is very important to my remaining activations. He then misses and my turn goes sideways. If he had a re-roll or second shot, I'd be much happier with him, otherwise he's great. The Nyss Hunters didn't do much in either game, I think I was just to conservative with them in the first game and they got killed quickly in the second. I want to use them again, they seem to have a lot of potential. The Troll Scouts are sweet, not too expensive points wise, but they can hit hard and quick and have nice special abilities like Pathfinder, Hunter, Advance deploy, Gang, Assault, Prowl, etc. I'm really enjoying them and there freedom of movement and attack vectors. I think I need a few more games with them to really get a feel for them, but they make me happy.

I Haven't played Janissa except with Edoomshaper, so I need to make sure to use her more too.

Otherwise, I'm thinking of playing Cryx in the near future. I don't see them in our local meta and I like to keep my gaming group up on what all the factions can do, so they don't get wrecked by people they don't normally play against at Tournaments.

Mulg Force 5

This Weekend I played in a very special tournament called the Bryan Carroll Invitational. It's called that because Bryan invited us over to his place for a day of Warmachine while his wife and kids are out of town. I played Edoomy, Mulg, and Janissa together for the first time and it was Magical. Undeated magical. I managed to play Circle (Kormac), Trollbloods (Grissel), Cryx (PDenny) and Legion (PThagrosh) and got the Caster Kill each game. My favorite moment was against PDenny, as she popped her Feat and hit Mulg with Crippling Grasp, then giving Mulg seven inched of movement so as to move forward and engage Denny, then while under Wild aggression managed to score a hit on her and with Boosted damage killed her in one shot.

Mulg is a Beast, I really like how he's been playing. He's super tough, especially when buffed, hits hard and accurately, has reach and adds some magic denial to the army. I'm sold on him and I'm sure my opponents are going to hate him soon.

Janissa turned several games in my favor with well placed walls and moving enemy jacks out of combat with Tectonic shift. In my first few games she felt like she might be spent on more whelps or maybe Saxon Orrick or a Pathfinder, but in games where I felt out threated by range or my bad positioning, her Rock wall covered my boys and deflected several attacks. In one game it let me aggressively advance toward a very scary infantry based army, granting me the first strike as opposed to being charged/slammed by long riders first.

Epic Doomshaper feels like coming home, even though I've only played him for a week now. His spells get feel like a "Best of" list, I loved Iron Aggression and Full Throttle, so Wild Aggression is something I'm very familiar with, while I've used Refuge with Kara Sloan and Hoof it with Grissel, so the after combat movement is also something I've got experience exploiting. Primal Shock is sweet and easy to use as it his other Direct damage spell. Agitation is going to take a little skill to use correctly, as every time I've used it, it was just before I killed at least one of his (my Opponent) beasts and solved the fury problem for him. Doomy's free Dire Troll Animus is also something I'm really happy with, although I found out he can't cast Transmute on himself and get the Speed Bonus of Difficult Terrain, as he did not have the animus on him at the start of the activation, when you check. His Feat is pretty sweet for firing off the Big trolls, +3 speed and free charging is pretty sweet.

I've Recently Started to play Monsterpocalypes and I'm really impressed be it. I'm still not sold on the collectible aspect of it, but it does have small sets. The Small sets seem to make it easy to get the models you want, so I'm hoping it's not going to be too expensive. That aside, I'm very happy with the game play. I've played about four games and I'm thinking it's more complex then Warmachine. The Dice resource system with alternating unit/monster turns really makes me think, then think, and then think some more. Learning and remembering the Icon system is also a challenge, but I found a wedsite the shows all the stats with all the ability rules, so it's a lot easier to figure out what everything does. It's so very satisfyingly when you slam a monster though four buildings, crushing both yours and his units and then finishing the smash with him ending the slam on a nuclear reactor so he takes some radiation damage too.

Mulg makes me happy.

I just got Mulg and have started painting him. That's my primer + Detail drybrush. I tend to drybrush a color on my models before I really think about painitng a model. The drybrush is slightly heavy and is intend to A) allow details to stand out, so I can plan my paint job better, B) it makes the model much more table top ready and C) it allows me to use thinner paint for base coating, while letting the black primer show though in the cracks and crevices.

I've played a couple games with Mulg and I really like him. His slow speed is a bit of an issue, but it's so worth it with his Reach, armor 19 and 35 damage boxes.

Warstorm!

I just wanted to post a mini review of the Facebook game "Warstorm". Warstorm is a Collectable Crad game owned by Zynga and it's very similar to Magic the Gathering, but the game plays it's self, the players only contribution is to deck design. You make squads of 7 cards and once you start a game you pick the required number of squads and the game starts. Once the game starts the only thing you can control is play speed and pausing, otherwise the cards are randomly drawn and played for you. This my sound like a big negative, but it's really well done and fun to watch. You root for your cards and watch the game unfold. Games are quick and because of the nature of the automatic game play, you can play against your friends regardless of if they are online or off. Numerous awards track all your wins as you work to unlock power cards.

While this game is free to play, you can spend money on it to buy booster packs, campaigns, prebuilt squads or singles, but the prices are very cheap compared to current card games and you never have to figure out how and where your going to store your cards. I've played this since last winter and I've spent maybe 150 dollars over that time (10 and 20 dollars a pop), but when playing the WOW TCG a few years ago I was spending close to 1000 every other month trying to stay current. If you have played and enjoyed CCGs in the past, I highly recommend Warstorm.

Foodmachine Tournament wrap up

We had 13 people show for the Foodmachine event that ran this weekend. Over 250 cans where collected for the Second Harvest Charity.

Asside from the two guys who each brought 60+ cans and had that many rerolls, the only really suprise was the faction turnout, We had two each of the Hordes original factions and one each of the first five Warmachine factions. Only Elfs and Minions where not represented. I was a little surprised that we had more Hordes then Warmachine, I think that's only happened before at the Genesis event.

I did ok, My list was a power house, but I lost on tiebreaker on two games. I always felt my Trolls where taking control of the game when Dice down would be called and I'm just shy of reducing two units below half, but my Kriels are one model under half and lose there points value. I really enjoyed running the Kriel Warriors with UA and 3 Cabers. I had a Single Caber for months but it's just not the same as three of them. That unit can hit harder then most heavys on single targets on a charge, with Heroic Ballad buffing them.

I was cleaning up terrain while the Final placings where being announced, so I'm only sure on First Place.
Congrats to Sean and his Trollbloods for taking Game Kastle's first Foodmachine in a fury of fellcalls.

So some time around 2000, I helped set up and run a Warhammer 40,000 tournament called "Brainbasha", it was our local attempt at a Bay Area grand tournament. Anyway, ten years later and I just receive all the terrain we made for the event.

Almost a month since I last posted, so time to get this going again. I've been playing around with Both Cygnar and Trolls latily. I finally got my last two Caber Tossers so I can field a full unit with all three Cabers. I Proxies them the other night with Grissel and a Ton of different buffing units. Kriel Warriors are my new Voltron, they form up like a Blazing Sword. The Cabers did most the damage needed to kill a Kodiak and Beast 09 thanks to being P+S 18 with two attack each (Grissel's Heroic Ballad). For the longest time I felt my Trolls had issue with high armor (only heavy beasts seemed to counter them, but they tend to die quick easily, but with the Caber tosser madness, I'm no longer worried about Khador jacks.

I've been also playing Epic Nemo and a game with Ashlynn (not really Cygnar, but I used Gun Mages). ENemo is really starting to Grow on me. Fail Safe is a Jailhouse repair, but a lot of the time it's all I need, plus with ENemo, you can allot focus to a Crippled Cortex after you throw Failsafe on it. It's very cool. All his other shenanigans are also very useful. Energizer makes me happy inside every time I use it. I love advancing my shooting jacks with Energizer then standing still for an aiming bonus, or standing still for an aiming bonus then using energizer to back away a few inches.

Also an update on my stuggle with using Rough Terrain correctly, some pointed out that you can always measure form the back of your base to the edge of the rough terrain, instead of placing a spare base outside of the terrain like I suggested.

I'm helping Organise a Foodmachine event for later this month. If you hadn't heard, Foodmachine is a Charity event where the players bring canned food in and donate it, with each can granting a Reroll to be used in the Tournament.

Rough terrain

One of the most common mistakes I have made and I see other make is how they move though rough terrain.

Rough terrain effects you as long as your base is in the terrain, but I usually see people declare there movement intention, measure how much rough terrain there is between the active model and open ground then double that distance to see how much movement was wasted moving though the rough terrain. This is however incorrect, as this does not take account for the length of the models base. A 50mm base is almost 2"s long (I think it's a few MM short). This means a large based model must add two more inches to the distance travels, costing the model 4 more inches of movement.

So the the Ironclad moved 5 inches to get completely into open terrain, this cost the Ironclad 10 inches

of it's movement.

I recommend using extra bases or models that are not in the game to help measure out the real distance spent in rough terrain. I hear Litko and other businesses make plastic colored bases that might be easier to grip and cheaper to use then the beveled bases Privateer uses for there models. I have a fair amount of extra bases from Privateer and then gluing something easy to grab to it's top. I'm not sure what I'll use, but when I've figured it out, I also plan on painting them with standard facings and using them for stand-ins for models that can't be placed where it should because of modeling problem (large weapons or super cool dynamic poses that lead to models that are larger then there base).

I'll post photos when I finish making those marker/bases.

Mangled Metal summery

So the Mangled Metal tournament I've been organizing happened today and we had a great turn out. 18 players competed today and more appears after the tournament started, to watch and play pick up games. I ended up getting some many questions during my first two games, I decided to drop to the bottom of the pack and play the newer players and help them have a good play experience.
My Two Lists where:

I'm first two games however where tense,

First round I played Eric, a old friend of mine. I played ENemo Vs. Goreshade the Bastard. Shadowmancer does a great job of Hosing 3 Chargers. I managed to get an Assassination kill while I was losing the attrition battle. This was a tight battle, Goreshade was running the Deathjack and Reaper, and the Reaper is pretty sweet in Mangled Metal.

My second round, I play Henry, a very skill player. I played Kraye versus Borka with a Bomber, Prye, and Implaler. This match sucked becasue Windwall owns my list, I did send in the Cent with Full Tilt and under the Horsepower feat, and he killed the Keg Pgy and almost killed the bomber. Almost is not really that good aginst Hordes as the Bomber got healed enough and buff by the pyre troll, who also walked up and Arm locked the cent's shield. The bomber still didn't kill the cent but did leave it with 3 damage left. No longer having a plan, I charged Kray in to the Bomber and missed it three times in a row (on a Cav charge too), then the Two hunters shot at the bomber (now out side of windwall) and missed. After that my opponent cleaned me up. Some where in there I also killed the pyre, but that was partiality due to the Impaler frenzying and hitting him.

Third Round I played Mahir, a local player that's been playing since the start of Mark 2. He's a solid Cygnar player. He played PNemo to my ENemo. This list was PNemo, Hammersmith, Ironclad and Lancer. I played ENemo the rest of the day and I didn't want to give newer players a weird introduction to Cygnar, due to Kraye's Cav special rules. But that worked out well for me, I really enjoyed playing ENemo. In out game we both maneuvered/stumbled into a Voltaic snare/Galvanic Bolt war. The Good news for me was that I brought guns to this immobilize battle. Also I now love "Fail Safe", it's my Jailhouse repair skill. One of my Chargers got it's cortex wreaked by an Ironclad, so I cast Fail Safe on it, popped ENemos feat, filled it up and watched it finish of the Ironclad after the Centurion failed to scrap it. This keep the Charger operational and ended up getting me the kill on PNemo.

Round Four I played Eli and his Protectorate force. He played EFeora with Blessing of Vengence (the character Arcnode), Castigator, and Repenter(3 Rof missile lancher light). I played Enemo again. This was a tight game with me feating on turn one for a 3 charger salute on the Blessing of Vengence. It survived, but lost both arms, I missed a few shots, and Nemo spammed buffs. The Cent gets Fail Safe as a default and everyone had some energizer fun. Eli spammed Bonded Repenter rockets all over the place and started fires, the Castigator joined in and pretty soon all my jacks where ablaze. His jacks where high enough army that I was having problems killing them and while attempting to do so, Feora rolled up, popped her feat after spamming more rockets at my battle group, Feora Sprayed Nemo with her flamer thrower and missed, then hit him with a boosted convetion and moved fire on to him with his feat. After her feat turn Nemo had 1 health left, and rolled for the fire to go out and it did, until we remember caustic flames don't go out and then we roll dice -4 on Nemo and the roll of 3 on the two dice meant he lived! So I alloted 3 focus to two chargers and gunned Feora down.

I had a great time, I think everyone else had fun. Best turn out in a long time for Warmachine/Hordes event in quite a while.

(at least I think that's it, we also had random prizes and I was cleaning up while Jeff our TO was handing out the Awards).

More Mangled Metal thoughts

So I've been thinking about Mangled Metal and played a few test games with GoreShade the Bastard, two slayers, a Deathripper, and a Stalker. It was interesting to play, The Banethralls from Goreshades feat are very useful but I'm not as happy with Shadowmancer as I'd have hoped.

I think I'll test out Cygnar tonight. I'm going to be playing Kraye with two Hunters and a Centurion. I figure this list has insane speed and maneuver elements, I should be able to grind down my opponent with Light Cav Hunters, while the Full Tilted Cent can keep up with a Running Kraye (if I'm getting boxed in or in a Danger zone). The Cent waits until he can get the charge on the Caster or last Jack, then I pop Horse Power for the kill. Also if the Cent is engaged I can call a ride by, kill the target then fall back 8". Mage Sight allows me to attempt to deal with Stealth. I can generate a fair amount of shooting, but not really enough to justify using Guided Fire, unless Kraye is also shooting.

I'm trying to Figure out who my second caster will be, after Kraye, they all seem to pale. PHaley is my current choice, as she's very tough to Spell kill and can counter high speed rushes, but I'm not sure what Jacks to support her or what I'm trying to do to win.

Thoughts on Mangled Metal

So, I've been thinking about lists for the upcoming Mangled Metal/Fang and Claw Tournament. I hadn't really giving this format much thought before. I'd played in a lot of mangled metals in the past but even the tournaments I played in tended to be a pick up events where I was not planning on playing in it. My big fear is Karchev and other casters that can kill Jacks/beasts and take a beating. So When building MM/FaC lists I think you want to focus on 2-3 heavies and a beatstick Caster. I was originally going to play my Trolls in this event, but after looking over my collection of beasts and casters, I think I'll go with my Cygnar or Cryx instead. For Trolls I have a few casters I'd consider for this type of scenario, but I'm lacking the beast support I'd want. I'd run Borka with two Earthborns, but I don't have dups of my Earthborn and I've only got one game with Borka. Two Earthborns are the core of all my Theorymachine lists, although I was also looking at a Mauler/bomber combo, but with out an Axer or Impaler, I felt the threat ranges where two small. Also Beasts tend to be slightly more expensive then jacks and a little less durable, both these factors have swayed my choice to Warmachine armies. With Cryx I can run Denny with two Slayers and two arcnodes, or Coven with the same or swap out the Slayers for a Deathjack. Cygnar takes a little more effort and if I had a third Ironclad, I'd run them with Estryker, instead I think I'll run Ol'Rowdy, Ironclad, and Charger. Maybe Siege with Defender, Hunter, and Charger.

Oh, I just realized I have a ton of Merc Jacks, maybe it's time for Magnus to come out of Retirement. Bart's Theme list drops Mariners down to 7 points each, allowing him to run two Mariners and two Buccaneers. So many choices, I don't know what to do. To make it even more fun, my Khador army is currntly a bunch of Jacks and Casters, with only a min winterguard as infantry and only a Wardog for my solos, but that matters little in Mangled Metal. Sigh, life was easier with I was just looking at my trolls, now I'm a kid in the Candy Store.

Steamroller? What Steamroller?

I help organize our local store's monthly Warmachine tournament and we have had a bunch of new players show up on league night lately so I figured it's time for a Mangled Metal event. Normally I'm a bit of a fanboy for official tournament rules like Steamroller, so even when I'm not happy with the current state of that rules set, I try to follow it anyways as if gives everyone a common ground of understanding, everyone uses the same rules. But as I looked though the Steamroller Doc for the Mangled Metal rules, I just realized how many events I've been too or even helped run that are not supported by Steamroller. Also I realized Mangled Metal is not listed in the steamroller rules. Both the Genesis and Resurgence where not steamrollers and I'm always seeing people use Mangled Metal or "progressive army size" as a tournament format, but that's not supported as a Steamroller format. It never occurred to me, to not run a Steamroller if I was able too. So the next event I'm helping run will be Mangled Metal.

I've been playing Lotro a bit and I'm really enjoying it. Also I started to play some Warstorm once again, it's a facebook game that's sort of like an automated Magic the Gathering, it's pretty entertaining.

On to Warmachine stuff. What's up with all the Infantry machine players I keep running into. Jacks or Beasts are where the game gets good. Most Hordes players know this or at least have to take beasts so I'll focus more on Jacks, even though a lot of what I'm going to say applies to them too. Jacks are tactically very flexible, power attacks and focus allocation are very good and powerful effects, add to that the fact that most heavy jacks are very hard to take out and you have a winner. All Jacks have powerful anti infantry tech once you figure in multiple attacks, slams, and throws. Heavy jacks get trample too, making them even better against infantry and making it that much harder to protect something from a close heavy. Head butts allow for amazing melee or shooting follow up attacks. Maybe people just don't know how to use Jacks, but it scares me when I look across the table and see multiple heavy jacks or beasts.

Also, anyone know how to beat Karchev in a 15 point mangled metal? He hurts my head.

Also here is a link to a Chess clock discussion I started on Focus and Fury. Focus and Fury is the most wretched hive of scum and villainy on the internets, so view them wisely.

So my take on trying to improve on both Chess clocks and timed turns are as such. Both ideas require some testing and refinement. For Chess clocks make the secondary or Tertiary tiebreaker be based on having spent less time then your opponent, giving the faster player an advantage in the match and really discouraging stalling. I would allow for a margin that gives players some leeway, like if your times are both 5 minutes apart or less, no one gets this tie breaker. (first guess, maybe 5 minutes is too short). That last sentence looked confusing, so what I mean't was you have to use less time then the slower players total time plus 5 or more minutes to win this tie breaker. This could also favor the second player a little, if he missed his next turn do to "Dice down", the extra time the first player spent could give the second player this tie breaker.

For timed turns I would add a turn limit, you play for 5 turns max, but set up the time restriction to allow for this, unless people are running very far behind schedule . Don't allow control point or VPs to end the game, use them only as first tie breaker. The game only ends after turn five or at Caster Kill (Die down would only be called after a very generous time limit . Something like; Total turns times turn limit plus 10 minutes more for extensions and 5 minutes more for to avoidDice down being an issue.
So
N+X+E+5
N being the total number of turns BOTH players are expected to play (I think 5 is a good number, so N would be 10 for my event)
X is the timed turn limit, 10 minutes are 35 points, 12 minutes at 50.
E is equal to both players extensions, usually 5 minutes each, for a total of 10.
So dice down in a 35 point event would be 115, versus the 80 minutes Plus 2-12 minutes that are used now. That may be too much time, but most games should end before that time, but cheap scenarios wins would be gone unless they can also hold ground, not ending the game at turn two or three.

So the Saturday tournament happened and while I mostly enjoyed my self, my first game was frustrating.

I played my Grim list all day and I enjoyed the list very much. Grim is a sweet caster and running 50 points of beasts with him was fun. We had an 8 player turn out, so no one was getting byes, but we have had much better turn outs before. The faction line up was two Khador, two Circle, Menoth, Merc, Cygnar, and me playing Trollbloods.

I played Johnny and his Khador first round in a Killbox mission.
Johnny is a local player and a good friend of mine, but we both got a little heated in this game. I felt he was wasting my time during my turns with slow tough rolls and having to fish a dismounted Fenris out of his minis bag when I killed the Dragoon (this caused me to lose activating a few models and stopped my Earthborn mid attack, but I forgot about the time extension) . So when I tried and failed to get the Caster Kill on EButcher, I knocked him down, attacked a bunch at range but I didn't have the speed to get the Earthborn into finish him. So I resigned to losing, but Johnny started his turn, Walked the butcher up to Grim and started to swing, I said nope, you where knocked down and didn't shake it off, then you moved you caster, so you forfeit your attacks. He got very frustrated by this and said he conceded, I told him to get the Judge and see what he said. The judge ruled that what happened happened and there was no take backs, but he could still spend focus for extra attacks. The Epic Butcher then slaughtered all my beasts and my caster. :( After the Tournament I thought about that and realized you don't forfeit your initial attacks, you forfit your actions, so you can't buying attacks. So I should have lost, if Johnny shook off the knockdown, but he but lost anyway. I'm a little bitter, but I failed on my turn because I didn't plan it well, so that's my bad. (I feated that turn to set up the caster kill, then had Grim shoot the butcher with the net gun, instead of my rifle, where "bait the line" would have gotten the Earthborn to the Butcher, additionally if I used the rifle I won't have moved up into the butcher's threat range.

My second game was against an old friend from out of town, Matt playing Epic Magnus. We played convergence that round. Basically did a turn two feat with EMagnus picking both player's table edges so I could only do lateral movements, he also ran the Halbardiers up to pin my models in place. But I just took free strikes and Shot Magnus down on my turn. The assassination run required me to puzzle out some stuff and kill a few models, but worked well and gave me the game. Matt's a good player and will be great once he gets more games in.

Round three had me playing my roommate, Rich with his Circle. We played Incursion and it was a slow grind, with him out maneuvering me and slightly out dicing me, I seemed to always leave models alive with 1 or 2 health, then he would swing buck and kill my beasts. Skin walkers are a huge pain to clear out, and while I was killing two or so a turn, He had ten of them. I managed to kill his Stalker and maybe his Pureblood (I can't remember if I sealed the deal on that, after my turn two he seemed to always be 2-3 hit points from death), but his Warp wolves with Epic Kaya are amazing. Just when you think he's going to have to commit, Kaya pops her feat and then the warp wolves house your models, then port back to Kaya.

Warmachine Vs. Hordes

Hey all,

So I've been thinking about Warmachine and Hordes now that MK2 has been around for a while and how the two sister games work. As we all know they are compatible but have different play styles and nuances. Hordes allows your Beasts and Warlocks to be very active, but I feel that support elements such as feats, spells, and models are weaker then the Warmachine counterparts. Warmachine has more powerful effects and models but the limits of Focus mean your caster and jacks are not as dynamic as Hordes. This is the balancing point.

Warmachine models feel like they are 10% - 15% stronger then Hordes models, but that's because you have to rely on their unboosted stats more. In Warmachine you only have around a half dozen focus to power your Jacks and cast spells, so you need to utilize your infantry more and your spells need to be more influential as your cost to cast them is much higher then in Hordes.

Hordes allows the Warlock to have access to all his fury and have his beasts run at full steam. This means they can boost to hit and damage a lot more freely, while the caster can throw spells like a mad man. Hordes support models are in the same ball park as Warmachine figures, but they just don't quite match up on a point to point comparison, unless you start applying buffs and spells. Someone might try to tell me that Troll infantry is amazing, Trollkin are tough and has a ton of ways to buff them to outrageous levels. This is true, but all those buffs come at a price in points that is not insignificant and while they appear to have tough for free, the medium bases are a pain to maneuver around.

I got a copy of the Trollbloods book last night, I friend picked it up for me at PAX. I'm pretty happy with it, the main story is sweet, with a few characters I didn't expect to see and some very cool fights. The new units are all pretty cool, but now I'm sad as I have to wait months to get all the cool stuff. PDoomshaper's theme list has unlimited 3 point Rune Shapers!

When playing agonist a Hordes player, you want to roll Odd numbers when you roll for hit location. This gives you the best shot a crippling an aspect of the Warbeast. Even hit locations mean you have to crew though about 60% of that anspect with out being able to cripple it (unless it's almost dead and you roll all the way around to finish the beast). It's not that big a deal, but if you have models with the sniper ability almost always call the odd numbered spirals.

The Left are is not as protected as the Right.

On this Warjack damage grid, at first it looks like all systems are equally protected, as least as far as left side versus right. However the truth of the matter is that the left arm is much more vulnerable then the right. If you hit column 1 for 7 damage, the left arm would be crippled, but not so on column 5, the cortex would take a point and the right arm would survive with one box left. Now image what would happen if column 6 was hit for say 10 damage, that would fill column 6, 1 and go four damage deep on column 2, once again crippling the left arm, but 10 points on column 4 would fill that column and leave 4 damage for column 5, almost crippling the cortex, but with out other damage, is no where near destroying the right arm.

Just something to think about.

Well I don't know what happened with the Summer Ramage, I don't expect much as it turns out no one else entered except me. I was hoping some late comers would show up and make it a competition but no one joined.

Oh well, someone (Pascal) did show up and we played a 50 point game. We didn't play a mission.
Pascal was running PButcher, Wardog, 2 Kodiaks, a berzerker, 5 man Demo Team, Max Winterguard with Officer/standard, Kovnik Joe, Greylord Terrion, 2 Man Hunters and Yuri.

I ran Grissel, Runebearer, Mualer, Earthborn, Axer, 6 Scattergunners, 10 Kriel Warriors with 1 Caber, Piper/Standard, Cronicaler, 6 Kriel Stone Bearers, Eldar, Fell Caller, and 6 Pyg Borrowers.

We Matched up with me going first and him setting up placed WInterguard on the left flank across from my Scatter gunner and near the center of the table where my Caster and Beasts where. My Warriors faced off the right flanks against Yuir, 2 Man Hunters, and the Demo Team. This Jacks and Terrion where alined across the center of the table from my Caster, beasts and support models. The Pygs started infront of the Scatter gunners.

Turn 1:
I went first, had the Pygs burrow and move towards the center of the table. Everything else advanced/ran up.
He cautiously advanced gaining ground but not risking getting charged first. This Manhunters and Yuri used some Ruined castle sections to advance behind.

Turn 2:
My army advances, the Pygs appear, ready to charge all the Jacks and some Demo teams. My Warriors advance up with the +2 speed buff and engage a Manhunter and Yuri and one lucky hit kills Yuri and hurts the one of the other Man Hunters. The Pygs get buffed by fell caller for +2 mat, the Cronicaler give them Heroes Tragedy. They Charge up and I figure out on can charge the Wardog, so I figure you not and charge. I didn't think about how I'd be in the Butcher's Reach and have to test for terror, but that's what happened and my unit broke. So no borrower attacked :(. My Scatter Gunners shoot up the Winter guard but only kill one or two guys thanks to Bob and Weave and Iron Flesh. Grissel Pops feat and buff Earthborn with rage, Kriel Stone pops the +1 str Buff and then he Charges the two Kodiaks, that lined up to protect the Butcher, He Scraps one and puts over half damage on the second one (go 6 pow 20 attacks!). Mauler buffs the Fell caller, who then charges into the last Kodiak and Kills it in one attack. Everyone uses Hoof it to maneuver to safety or engage threatening Targets.
He works a lot of his units trying to get the Pyg Borrowers out of the way, but tough rolls and Heroes Tragedy punish him for it. By the end of his turn they are wiped out and the manhunters manage to kill two Trolls Warriors. The Butcher Feats and charges the Earthborn and kill it in two hits. His Winterguard kill most the scattergunners and a few kriel stone bears scribes. The Berzerker kills some warriors that engaged it with the Hoof it moves, while most the Demo crew stand up from being knocked down from Killing the borrowers.

Turn 3: The Butcher is exposed and in Charge range of Grissel but no one else. So I use Charge of the Trolls on her from the Cronicaler, Ran the axer to engage him, Had Grissel Charge and buff her self (I should have had the Mauler Buff her, or used the Runebear first). Grissel Beats him down to 3 hit points and slams him knocking him down, but he's still camping four focus and my only ranged play was to have the mauler throw the axer at him, and I did, but at pow 13 (I forgot to use his Rage) against armor 22 would require me to roll a 12 on the unboostable colateral damage roll. I rolled a 9, making for a perfect Zero damage.
Then it was his turn and the Butcher killed her in 2 swings.

It was a good game, and one I'd probably had won if I had a little more experience with Trolls and Grissel.

UPDATE: Just reread the cronicaler and noticed that he can only buff units, so when I used him to buff Grissel with "Charge of the Trolls", she was not a legal target for that buff. The +2 to hit from that really helped me "own" the Butcher, so with out it, I don't know if I had that much chance of killing the butcher, even with the mauler buffing her. Maybe if I had the Runebearer, reduce here spell cost and then if I hit the "Butch" with Calamity first, but that would still cost 3 focus with a boosted to hit roll.

Off to tuesday night Warmachine.

Pages 21-29 are full of optional rules to make for exciting events or to tweak the game for a particular community. If you have a lot of new players who also play or used to play 40K you might use the "No Caster Kill" rule so players can keep playing after there caster is killed. Or Accelerated Time limits in a venue that is available only for a short period of time. You can Mix and match this rules for different challenges to game play.
I really like the idea of Survival Scoring for tie breakers instead of Strength of schedule, if might have some broken meta game consequence down the line, but I think it's great as it's something you can influence in game (requiring some skillz) and also that does not favor Assassinations or Scenarios over one the other, like assassination scoring where number of Caster kills is the first tie breaker. If you have a group that doen't favor caster kills or that love caster killin, you can challenge them by rewarding or punishing scenarios.

Here are a few ideas for zazzy event formats, because sometimes even the best things are lacking a little Zazz.

Deadline: Causul time limits first round, normal time limits second round, accelerated Time limts on the third and final hardcore time limit for the rest of the event. If you lose a game, you go to the next higher time limit (ie get more time).

Grand Melee: Two rounds of 50 points games then three rounds of mangled metal. Game play should be under 6 hours, so I think this could be a blast to play in and get plenty of experecne with you warcaster and Beasts/Jacks.Additionally add the "Survival Scoring" and a Thematic scenario selection, like this:
First Round (50 points) : Overrun
Second Round (50 points) : Incursion
Third Round (15 points Mangled Metal/Claw and Fang) : Convergence
Fourth Round (15 points Mangled Metal/Claw and Fang) : Destruction
Fifth Round (15 points Mangled Metal/Claw and Fang) : Kill Box
And you have a neat "Battle Campaign" themed tournament that should have some very interesting game play.

Grinder: a Reverse Progressive format where you start with 50, then go to 35 and finally play the last rounds as 15 mangled metal. The Zaz is that it represents the lose of resources over a battle/war. My only worry about this format is that with one a single 15 point game, one bad match up is to telling. Larger games mitigate the advantage that overspecialization give in smaller games. Stuff like All Stealth armies or Khador can ruin some people's day as they require specized units to counter well (high p+s vs Khador or anti stealth tech vs stealth when you have much shooting) In Grand Melee you get three games at 15 points, so one horrible match up is not the end of you run.

Just got back from my beating in Sacramento. I opted to play Grissel Bloogsong in the Event.

I like this list, I think it's got some juice to it but I really should not have tried to learn how to play it in a time turn event. I played one game with either Grissel or the Chronicler before today. It showed with all but my forth (and Last) round game ending my Feat turn before I had finished moving my army, those losing the area wide "Hoof It" and leaving my army hanging in the wind, well that's not quite true, one game I was housing my opponent but I feated, smashed some stuff then "Hoofed it" to safety and away from the control points giving him two turns of Command point harvesting and the game win. I started to feel like the feat heralded my doom. However it work like a charm in the four game, I understood the rules and didn't have to reference anything and I understood that I needed to speed though my turn. When used well that feat is magical, All my units in her 12" control radius gain an extra melee attack, fearless, and can get a free advance with no free strikes at the end of the turn, plus no enemy spells or enemy orders in the control area. Wow, that's pretty sweet.

I'd like to thank the Sac crowd for being very cool and proficient in the rules and tactic of Warmachine. That's a club that has game. Jimmy (the PG) rules tight events, with cool preset terrain, on the spot rulings, and timely action (I.e. getting the events going and making sure everyone is on the same page). I look forward to the next time I'm up there.

Both these events where Progressive lists, in other words you start is a small army and each round you add more points to the previous army. It's a tricky but fun format. I look forward to try it out in reverse where you army get smaller each round instead of Bigger.

I've been playing Trollbloods for almost two months now and I though I was going ok with them, But recent games tournaments have proved me wrong. I think I'm going to play my Cygnar again for a while. Of course when the Troll book hits in a few weeks, I'll probably be back to them again.

Welcome to the NinjaHut, a Blog dedicated to Gaming. I'll mostly focus on Table Top Games (TTG), but from time to time I'm sure I'll mention Video games, Movies, or Massivily Multiplayer games. Currently I'm playing Warmachine and Hordes, Dungeons and Dragons Online, and I'm thinking about starting up Warhammer 8th Edition. For Warmachine and Hordes, I play Cygnar, Cryx, and Trolls. I also have Menoth, Mercs, some Khador and the start of a Skorne Army, but I haven't played them in MK2 yet.
